Sierra Cinemas, Nevada City, Sun Apr 22 – JOFFREY: MAVERICKS OF AMERICAN DANCE – 1 hr 28 min – Unrated. A look at the Joffrey Ballet, the groundbreaking cultural treasure known as the first truly American dance company. Narrated by Tony and Emmy Award winner Mandy Patinkin and directed by Bob Hercules (Bill T. Jones: A Good Man), the film documents how the Joffrey revolutionized American ballet by daringly combining modern dance with traditional ballet technique, combining art with social statement and setting ballets to pop and rock music scores. The film features rare excerpts from many seminal Joffrey works including Astarte, Trinity and Billboards. As a special treat, Nevada County natives Michael Levine and Maia Wilkins, alumni of the Joffrey Ballet, will be present to talk about their experiences and answer questions.

Co-founded in 1956 by visionary teacher Robert Joffrey and dancer Gerald Arpino, who would become their principal choreographer, The Joffrey Ballet began as a DIY dance company of six dancers touring the United States in a borrowed station wagon. What started as a childhood dream quickly grew into one of the world’s most exciting and prominent ballet companies. Together, Joffrey and Arpino transformed the face of dance with bold new perspectives for edgy ballets that challenged conventions. Aggressive touring took the Company from school auditoriums across America’s Heartland, to the White House at Jacqueline Kennedy’s invitation, and on to Russia for a month-long tour during the height of the Cold War, and beyond. They also garnered extensive media attention for their daring originality, which included appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show, the cover of Time magazine, and in major motion pictures such as Save the Last Dance and Robert Altman’s The Company (which is based on the Joffrey).

Joffrey: Mavericks of American Dance weaves a wealth of rare archival footage and photographs along with interviews featuring former and current Joffrey star dancers, showing the full history of the Company from its founding to the present. It describes how the Joffrey repeatedly resurrected itself after devastating financial and artistic setbacks and introduced cutting-edge choreographers such as Twyla Tharp, Laura Dean and Margo Sappington to larger audiences.

The film features rare excerpts from many seminal Joffrey works including Astarte, Trinity and Billboards, as well as breakthrough collaborations with choreographers Twyla Tharp (Deuce Coupe), Kurt Jooss (The Green Table) and Leonide Massine (Parade).

Wow! A very dear friend and colleague has just written and published “Screaming Through the Silence: Memories, Truths and a Hope Towards Understanding.” Can’t tell you how proud I am that she had the courage, fortitude, and passion to find her voice so powerfully and eloquently. I had the extreme pleasure of finding an opportunity to read it while on an out-of-town excursion to attend advocacy training. I was nearly bursting with such pride when I finally put it down, and restrained myself until the following evening to call her and offer my deepest respect and admiration.

Kudos Mary Ann for your eloquence! Your voice is loud and strong. I am so proud of your insight, and your gentle graceful strength in articulating against the rape culture we currently inhabit. It is to work alongside you, and to bear witness to your spiritual growing and absoluteness. Life blessings to you and many thanks for allowing me to share this path with you!

About the Book:

“It happens quickly. I’m not in that house ten minutes before my world stops making sense.” From victim to survivor, Mary Ann Ricciardi pens from a most honest and heartfelt point of view, sharing what she knows to be true about the emotional ruin that trails behind the silence and myths surrounding intimate violence. In Screaming Through the Silence: Memories, Truths and a Hope Toward Understanding, Ricciardi writes with a purpose and desire to end the harmful silence of generations past and present. Presenting the issues simply and logically, Ricciardi’s “gentle rant” comes from years of social observations, her own personal struggle as victim turned survivor and her ongoing work with victims of intimate assault. Included are the voices of intimate assault and abuse survivors who so willingly share their truths in hopes of encouraging better understanding and awareness. “Society cannot understand because victims don’t tell; victims don’t tell because society does not understand.”

About the Author:

Mary Ann has been a Sexual Assault Support Services (SASS) Advocate at the Crisis Call Center since 2005, and has provided over 930 hours of face-to-face advocacy to child and adult victims of sexual assault, their friends and families in the year 2011 alone. She has been recognized by Senator Harry Reid, the Alliance for Victims’ Rights, and the Crisis Call Center as an exceptional advocate because of her tremendous dedication to and compassion for victims. Mary Ann continues to be an integral part of the SASS program not only as valuable member of the advocacy team, but also as a teacher, role model and mentor to advocate trainees.

Mary Ann is well known among her peers and colleagues as an outspoken, passionate activist whose writing and public speeches encourage societal dialogue and reflection on our views of rape. She reveals the long-term emotional and spiritual impacts of sexual assault and explains how our silence contributes to tacit acceptance and perpetuation of intimate violence.

*All proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to various nonprofit shelters and crisis centers.

Mikhail Baryshnikov

From the DCTV Blog:

Legendary ballet dancer, Mikhail Baryshnikov, has donated 35 boxes containing his personal archives — video recordings, photos, documents and letters — to the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. The incredible archives include some rare gems, such as videos where Baryshnikov can be seen practicing in Riga, Latvia (where he was born) as a young boy of 11 or 12 , doing exercises at the Vaganova School and working with such greats as Balanchine, Cunningham, Robbins and Graham. There is so much material that cataloging and digitizing is estimated to take at least three years, at which point it should be searchable by year, performance, dancer or choreographer. Baryshnikov has said that this archive represents his whole life. Considering that the 63-year-old is still working as a dancer, actor and founder of the Baryshnikov Arts Center in Manhattan, we are certain there is much more to come in his life.

This is cool. I particularly like the way tech inspires new ideas about how the crafting of projects like this materialize. It will be interesting to watch the finished product.

Beautiful beaded human skulls by Mexican Huichol Tribal Artisans. This and more were captured by Catherine Martin of Our Exquisite Corpse.

We have a beautiful 9″ beaded Jaguar head and I can attest to the gorgeous work, and their fragility – the artist use wax [in this case] as their medium which makes climate control necessary else the beads drop off. Tenuous beauty for sure.

Today, Nevada’s Senate Bill 140, which bans texting and hand-held cellphone use in the car went into effect. $50 dollar fine for the first offense. So a few months ago I purchased an earbud in preparation, which I promptly misplaced – uh, no cracks! Decided then then to overcome my aversion and look into headphones. Yowza! I’m sold!

Did a little online research and bought myself a Bluetooth version that has me driving hands-free, but wait! – I can also sync it to my laptop or iPod and dance anywhere around the house completely wire-free! No more worries over ear-buds falling out, or trying to decide which [if any] pockets to put the iPod in. Can also watch movies, or listen to podcasts or music without disturbing Tink. They’re perfect for me, and I consider them dollars well spent.

With East Africa facing its worst drought in 60 years, affecting more than 11 million people, the United Nations has declared a famine in the region for the first time in a generation. Overcrowded refugee camps in Kenya and Ethiopia are receiving some 3,000 new refugees every day, as families flee from famine-stricken and war-torn areas.

Meet Robert Battle, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s New Artistic Director designate – who will succeed Judith Jamison this July, he has announced today the creation of the New Directions Choreography Lab as a component to his vision and the Company’s 2011/12 Season.

want. here. now.

“I think that one of the things that choreographers suffer from is the lack of time and space. Certainly the access to bodies, to dancers,” says Mr. Battle. “I’m trying to find ways to identify choreographers who would benefit from having space and creative time to develop their work so that everything isn’t micro-waved. Things take time, and we should honor process.”

Mr. Battle’s interest in nurturing process has resulted in the New Directions Choreography Lab, which will offer assistance each year to four emerging or mid-level choreographers working in a variety of techniques.

New Directions will give choreographers access to versatile Ailey-trained dancers, rehearsal space and time, stipends, and the freedom to create without the pressures of a commission or final performance

“Often, we as choreographers have a deadline and we have to have a product at the end. I think that our culture is so product-driven that we often forget about the process,” says Mr. Battle. “And so the product tends to be stuck together with airplane glue just for a presentation, rather than having some sense that even if the ‘product’ isn’t a masterpiece, it’s a part of the journey.”

The idea of this concept is thrilling. I would so be interested in investigating the training further.

“Gaga is a new way of gaining knowledge and self-awareness through your body. Gaga provides a framework for discovering and strengthening your body and adding flexibility, stamina, and agility while lightening the senses and imagination. Gaga raises awareness of physical weaknesses, awakens numb areas, exposes physical fixations, and offers ways for their elimination. The work improves instinctive movement and connects conscious and unconscious movement, and it allows for an experience of freedom and pleasure in a simple way, in a pleasant space, in comfortable clothes, accompanied by music, each person with himself and others.“We become more aware of our form. We connect to the sense of the endlessness of possibilities. We explore multi-dimensional movement; we enjoy the burning sensation in our muscles, we are ready to snap, we are aware of our explosive power and sometimes we use it. We change our movement habits by finding new ones. We go beyond our familiar limits. We can be calm and alert at once.” – Ohad Naharin
