Break The Chain

Stay Tuned! We’ve registered to hold a “rising” here in Reno on this global day. Watch:

“Break the Chain” aims to raise awareness around the world about V-Day’s fastest escalating global campaign to date, ONE BILLION RISING. The ONE BILLION RISING campaign began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS. On 14 February 2013, V-Day’s 15th anniversary, activists, writers, thinkers, celebrities and women and men across the world will come together to express their outrage, strike, dance, and RISE in defiance of the injustices women suffer, demanding an end at last to violence against women.

Concha Buika – No habrá nadie en el mundo

She has an amazing voice! Listening to her En Mi Piel disk is just amazing, like honey.

Concha Buika was born in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, her family came from Equatorial Guinea; she grew up among gypsy people. Ever since she was a child her musical talent was evident, but it was after a visit to London to study drama when, after being invited to a Pat Metheny concert that her life changed. From that moment she began her musical career. During the 1990s she took part in different productions, such as Ombra by La Fura Dels Baus and the soundtrack for the Spanish film Km.O. At the same time she composed several songs such as “Ritmo para voçé”, “Up to the Sky”, and “Loving You” (all of them house successes in Europe).

From November 2000 to March 2001 she sang at The Luxor, Harrah’s, and Gold Coast casinos in Las Vegas. She also performed as a guest singer at the Blue Note festival in the same city.

Philippe Decouflé

Codex, the witty dance film by French choreographer Philippe Decouflé.

“I seek to dance in a kind of dis-equilibrium, where a fall never seems far away. Inspired by people like the Marx Brothers, particularly Groucho, I developed a taste for provocative risk-taking and exploiting the comical possibilities of repeating a mistake… “

Akram Khan has won a Theatre Award 2012 for Achievement in Dance

Akram Khan has won a UK Theatre Award 2012 for Achievement in Dance for his 2011 production DESH .

DESH 3 min excerpt from Akram Khan Company on Vimeo.

DESH is a new full-length contemporary solo and the most personal work to date from celebrated choreographer and performer, Akram Khan. DESH meaning ‘homeland’ in Bengali, draws multiple tales of land, nation, resistance and convergence into the body and voice of one man trying to find his balance in an unstable world.

Moving between Britain and Bangladesh, Khan weaves threads of memory, experience and myth into a surreal world of surprising connection. At once intimate and epic, DESH explores fragility in the face of natural forces, and celebrates the resilience of the human spirit in the rhythms of labour, in dream and story, and in transformation and survival.
