PINA is a film for Pina Bausch by Wim Wenders. The feature-length dance film was shot in 3D with the ensemble of the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch and shows the exhilarating and inimitable art of the great German choreographer who died in the summer of 2009, inviting the viewer on a sensual, visually stunning journey of discovery into a new dimension: right onto the stage of the legendary ensemble and together with the dancers beyond the theater, into the city and the surrounding industrial landscape of Wuppertal – the place that was the home and center of Pina Bausch’s creative life for more than 35 years.
Can I just say thank you, and acknowledge how extremely gratified and inspired I am by the students in Monday’s class? Thank you to those who have been around since day one, and many thanks to those who are just joining us. Can’t tell you how much fun I am having, and what a great way to begin each week.

Quidam was the very first Cirque show I’d ever seen under their famous bigtop tents. I was mezmerized and smitten by the music, the staging, the performers and wonders of live theatre.
This past week-end I downloaded from iTunes, and watched Wayne McGregor’s “Entity” – the most glorious full-length dance film that I’ve ever watched. I lost count of the number of times that a huge grin erupted on my face as I watch with pure joy.
From the TenduTV Press Release:
“TenduTV has launched the ballet world into 2011 with the release of the first-ever concert dance performances on iTunes. The critically acclaimed programs Entity from Wayne McGregor|Random Dance and the Hans Van Manen Festival from Dutch National Ballet are now available for download to own and rent on iTunes in the United States and Canada. Also available is the award-winning documentary 40 Years of One Night Stands: The Story of Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet…”
“For the first time, audiences can access great choreography as easily as they can any other form of art or entertainment,” said TenduTV Founder and General Manager, Marc Kirschner. “These releases are an important step forward for the field of concert dance, and we’re proud to be collaborating with two of the most innovative dance companies in the world in Wayne McGregor | Random Dance and the Dutch National Ballet…”
Wayne McGregor is a multi award-winning British choreographer, renowned for his physically testing choreography and ground-breaking collaborations across dance, film, music, visual art, technology and science. He is the Artistic Director of Wayne McGregor | Random Dance, Resident Company at Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London and Resident Choreographer of The Royal Ballet.
:: He’s a genius!
Update: Great Idea!! Nichelle at Dance Advantage has started a book club styled discussion for interested peeps on all things dance – videos included, and is launching the first such discussion on Wayne’s Entity. The project is called Delight in Dance with Terpsichorus [button link on the sidebar] or here. On February 24th, a new post will be posted to start the discussion/reactions to the work.
Entity is available for $3.99 rental or $14.99 permanent download on both iTunes and Amazon Video on Demand (U.S. and Canada) . In the UK and elsewhere, the DVD with additional features can be purchased for £9.99 at SadlersWells.com.
Myra Krien just released the announcement for the upcoming annual “Invaders of the Heart” showcase concert presented by Pomegranate Sudios and Mosaic Dance Co! The show will be held at the James A Little Theatre March 18th and 19th @ 7pm.
I traveled to see this extravaganza last year and it was phenomenal with Arish Lam, and so well worth the effort to get there. They just seem to get better and better! All of Myra’s troupes perform, so there are nearly 100 talented dancers onstage throughout, and the production an amazing creative spectacle.
This year’s featured guest artist is the incomparable Amy Sigil & UNMATA for the show, and who will conduct two 2-hour workshops:
“Fast like a Nascar” – Saturday, March 19 from 1:30 – 3:30pm
“Hi, my name is Improvisational Tribal Style, ITS nice to meet you!” – Sunday, March 20, 11am – 1pm
Am SO looking forward to this one!
Got a notice in the mail yesterday that Old World Imports will be closing its amazing Albuquerque, NM store soon. Beginning tomorrow, 01.14.11, they’ll be reducing their inventory in preps to liquidate everything. Sad, it was beautiful and definitely a destination stop for anyone traveling through the state.
They will still be maintaining TribalSouk online marketplace though, so there at least is some glimmer of light. I’ve made many a purchase here so I’m glad I can still get my DIY trinkets.
Our site was down for most of the day yesterday, so I’m behind in posting this. Enjoy.

“Christina Taylor Green, nine-year-old victim in today’s Tucson shootings, once was an infant designated to be a “Face of Hope” by virtue of her birth on September 11, 2001. She was one of the children born on 9/11, reports Tucson blogger David Abie Morales. And she is thereby featured in the book by Christine Pisera Naman, entitled Faces of Hope, Babies Born on 9/11, dedicated to all the mothers who gave birth and to their babies born on the day the World Trade Towers in New York City were taken down by an act of terrorism.Ironically, today her life ended in violence, as she fell under the attack of a gunman at a political function at a supermarket.”
