A beautiful young soul by the name of Brittany has declared that October 20th, 2010 as Spirit Day in remembrance of the eight youth who took their own lives because of bigotry and homophobia that made their pain unrelenting.  Tragic, and avoidable.

What’s remarkable is that despite her own personal stuggles, she appears to be casting her light outwards to shine light and hope for others in her community.  Big grateful love hugs to you Brittany!  I promise to wear purple on the 20th to honor your spirit, to remember those we have lost, and to pledge continued diligence in offering hope for those who are still struggling.

🙂  ::  Brittany McMillan:

“It’s been decided. On October 20th, 2010, we will purple in memory of the recent gay suicides. Many of them suffered from homophobic abuse in their schools or in their homes. We want to take a stand to say that we will not tolerate this. Purple represents Spirit on the LGBTQ flag and that’s exactly what we’d like all of you to have with you: spirit. Please know that times will get better and that you will meet people who will love you and respect you for who you are, no matter your sexuality. Please wear purple on October 20th to remember all the lives of LGBTQ youth that have been lost due to homophobia. Tell your friends, family, co-workers, neighbors and schools.”

UPDATED:  At Brittany’s request I have amended this post with a new announcement image and have omitted the names of the young men who died by suicide, as she was concerned about not having obtained proper permissions by the boys’ families.

Tribute is offered here.
